Extended Power-law Decays in Batse Gamma-ray Bursts: Signatures of External Shocks?

چکیده

The connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows is currently not well understood. Afterglow models of synchrotron emission generated by external shocks in the GRB fireball model predict emission detectable in the gamma-ray regime (>∼ 25 keV). In this paper, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of a subset of BATSE GRBs with smooth extended emission tails to search for signatures of the “early high-energy afterglow”, i.e., afterglow emission that initially begins in the gamma-ray phase and subsequently evolves into X-Ray, uv, optical, and radio emission as the blast wave is decelerated by the ambient medium. From a sample of 40 GRBs we find that the temporal decays are best described with a power-law ∼ t , rather than an exponential, with a mean index 〈β〉 ≈ −2. Spectral analysis shows that ∼ 20% of these events are consistent with fast-cooling synchrotron emission for an adiabatic blast wave; three of which are consistent with the blast wave evolution of a jet, with Fν ∼ t . This behavior suggests that, in some cases, the emission may originate from a narrow jet, possibly consisting of “nuggets” whose angular size are less than 1/Γ, where Γ is the bulk Lorentz factor. The Cosmological Signatures and Flux Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts with a Broad Luminosity Distribution

The cosmological expansion cannot produce the reported correlations of the gamma-ray burst timescale and spectral energy with peak flux if the burst model reproduces the BATSE 3B peak-flux distribution for a non-evolving burst source density. The required ratios of time dilation and redshift factors are only produced by monoluminous models at peak fluxes below the BATSE threshold, and they are ...

Possible EGRET Gamma-Ray Burst Detection Independent of BATSE Triggering

EGRET spark chamber data collected between 1991 April 22 and 1994 August 29 have been analyzed for gamma-ray burst events independent of BATSE triggering. To date, ve gamma-ray bursts that are coincident with a trigger from the BATSE instrument have been detected in the EGRET spark chamber. The EGRET-detected bursts have high energy power law tails and, in some cases, long duration emission. Be...

Constraints on the Gamma-ray Burst Luminosity Function from PVO and BATSE Observations

We examine the width of the gamma-ray burst luminosity function through the distribution of GRB peak fluxes as detected by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) and the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). The strength of the analysis is greatly enhanced by using a merged catalog of peak fluxes from both instruments with good cross-calibration of their sensitivities. The range of peak fluxe...

Smoothly Broken Power Law Spectra of Gamma-ray Bursts

A five-parameter expression for a smoothly broken power law is presented. It is used to fit Gamma-Ray Burst spectra observed by BATSE. The function is compared to previously used fourparameter functions, such as a sharply broken power law and the Band et al. (1993) function. The presented function exists as a WINGSPAN routine at http://www.astro.su.se/∼felix/wing.html

Probes of Diffusive Shock Acceleration using Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt Emission

The principal paradigm for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) suggests that the prompt transient gamma-ray signal arises from multiple shocks internal to the relativistic expansion. This paper explores how GRB prompt emission spectra can constrain electron (or ion) acceleration properties at the relativistic shocks that pertain to GRB models. The array of possible high-energy power-law indices in accelera...
